| Pink edge | Bleed, 0.125 in on the top, bottom and outer edges. Extend background art to the very edge; it gets trimmed off. |
|---|---|
| Solid line | Trim line: where the cover is cut. |
| Dashed line | Safe area, 0.125 in inside the trim. Keep text and logos inside it. |
| Grey column | The spine, sized from your page count and paper. Spine text needs 80+ pages and 0.0625 in clearance from each fold. |
| Yellow box | Where KDP prints the barcode: 2 × 1.2 in in the lower corner of the back cover. Leave it clear or KDP covers it with a white patch. |

Questions
Does this give the same numbers as Amazon's KDP cover calculator?
Yes, for paperbacks. It uses KDP's published formulas: spine width is page count × paper thickness (white 0.002252 in, cream 0.0025 in, colour 0.002347 in), with 0.125 in of bleed on every outer edge. Full cover width = bleed + back + spine + front + bleed; height = bleed + trim height + bleed. Results are rounded to three decimals like KDP's own tool.
Does it support hardcover?
This calculator supports paperback covers. For paperback and case-laminate hardcover design, use the free KDP Cover Creator. Check the final dimensions against KDP’s official cover template before publishing.
When can I put text on the spine?
KDP allows spine text from 80 pages up, and it must stay at least 0.0625 in away from each spine edge. Below that the spine is too thin and KDP rejects the cover.
